TEDx @MCH - What's 'CITIZEN'?

Hello! Good afternoon in Korea. My school counselor said I need more sleep.... :(....
Yeap, I can't have enough rest these days, but it wouldn't be matter because all of my friends who are third graders of high school have the same problems. Plz wish us luck to get some rest. :)

Anyway, This post is for describing what is CITIZEN that I have thought for city promotion.

Last post, I mentioned that we have limited personal connection network even any SNS have larger space to make it.
I wondered what makes an obstacle to finding new friend on SNS, in my case, Twitter and I got the answer from accessibility. SNS in these days can't reduce physical distance through who are stranger to us. Of course the systems help us to have comfortable and ubiquitous communicate. I mean, We have kind of fear to approach to a new friend, but the SNS is not that useful for decrease that reluctance.

This is very natural phenomenon. I also have tendency to accept a friend request I already know. How about you? Can you approve friend request from another country with no qualms? If there is not any message from the applicant, well, I feel sorry but I can't assure I accept it.

In this situation, we have problem to widen network. In personal, maybe, it doesn't be that big matter.

However, CITIES NEED IT. I think, since widen network between citizens who are not living in the same city is important to promote. In terms of city branding or city promotion, very simply, successful city promotion need involving people. The more the better. Unless numerous, various people participate in city promotion project, that must be going to fail.

I realize cities need new way to enhance citizens’ participation and SNS could be great solution.

Did you check out my essay on the previous my blogger page? I introduced a twitter account in my essay. Yes, Goyang-si (city of Goyang) twitter account. Isn’t it cute? :9

(Image from twitter account of Goyang-si : @Goyangcity)

The account is already famous through twitter users in Korea. Cities in Korea usually use their own webpage for campaign of publicity and City of Goyang also has an own website. However, the city is different with others. It understood that accessibility to citizen requires more entertaining method.  In fact, tweets of the account manager adopts not serious and one-way information delivery, but tries to use more amusing and funny tweets to lessen distance between the city and citizens. Result is successful. City branding of the Goyang-si greatly attracts to citizens and tourists. The city achieves more tourist, frequent and friendly communication with citizens and good city image at once. It proves need for SNS using city promotion.

Unfortunately, however, that case is one of the few successful cases. Until now, lots of official SNS accounts don’t work successfully. We have to analyze many more detail things to reveal what hinders their success.
One of reasons is their playground. What I want to say is, if cities that want to appeal to other cities and citizens have proper field for their promotion, it would be easy to do that.

PROPER FIELD. That’s origin of CITIZEN. The ‘Citizen’ is local-based grouping SNS system. (Of course it is not exist, it’s just my proposal yet.)

 It’s a simple idea.

All users can join the Citizen with no bothersome process. It needs you fill out that blanks. Two additional questions are also simple. ‘Which city do you live?’ and ‘Where is your favorite city?’ That’s all. I had an example on TEDx presentation with my imagination account. I live in Incheon, Korea, and my favorite cities are London (UK), Chicago (U.S.A), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). I fill all of blanks out and make my new Citizen account. Then I can use four categories in that page.

First, in M&N (It means Me & Neighborhoods) page, you can see timeline made by users who enjoy the Citizen in your city, in this example, Incheon. Citizen gathers users live in city in one page, and they talk about what’s going on in the city, debating it. Something interesting, problematic or attracting, anything. I call that the ‘Group’. The Group will be formed not only in the city of Incheon, but all of cities that have user of Citizens that contain my favorite cities.

Second Page, ‘Favorite’ shows the timelines which are organized by my favorite cities’ citizens. For instance, if I selected London as one of my favorite cities, I can look around Londoners timelines. What’s happening in London? In the past, someone who wants to know about another cities has to wander lots of internet websites. It’s true that the task is time-spending, demanding and discourages interest about the city. However, if the Citizen is commonly used, we don’t have to spend much time to get information. Citizens give you what you need and the Citizen helps you. The Citizen let you directly communicate with users who live in your favorite city, increasing accessibility. Let’s turn back to the example. I look around the London’s Group and find attractive users named Jonathan. Then I can send ‘Neighboring’ to him. Neighboring system is similar with ‘subscribe system’. If I give a Neighboring offer to Jonathan, I can receive his new post or news in M&N page, and vice versa.

Worldwide page bring the information or news of cities out where hadn’t be selected as ‘favorite city’, but if all of data from the cities except my favorites flock at once, the page is beyond its capacity to dealing with overly too much data. So that Worldwide page sorts the data which show to users with specified standards and displays. You can give Neighboring offers in that page, and if you have concern over new cities, also you can set that city up as your favorite.

I think SNS should guarantee personal space. Home will do that role. If M&N can be compared with open space to meet new friends, Home is your house that you can invite your close friend, who agreed with your mutual neighboring offer, and share your personal and friendly talking.

I expect that the Citizen's Grouping system will get effectiveness on two section.
First, wider community for users and second, self city promotion.
Until today, City promotion is preserve of city experts, but through the Citizen, all of citizens can be a promoter of their cities. What I am saying would be guideline for other citizens about Incheon.

OK, It's almost finished. I’ll update this post as soon as I find something needs to correct. My next post will deal with some flaws that the Citizen has. Before it, I think I have some rest….. OMG it’s already 11 p.m. See you next post! :D!
